3 Fun Facts About Your English Teacher (That Might Surprise You!)

💭 When you think about an English teacher, what’s the first image that pops into your head? Maybe someone with a steaming cup of tea permanently glued to their hand, correcting grammar in their sleep, and secretly smiling whenever they get to mark a stack of essays. Sounds about right, doesn’t it? Well… you might not be wrong about the tea part (guilty as charged!), but trust me—there’s so much more to us than red pens, textbooks, and pronunciation drills. 🤭

👀 The truth is, English teachers are just regular humans with quirky hobbies, funny pets, and little obsessions that have nothing to do with grammar rules or exam prep. And because I think it’s important for my students and readers to see the person behind the lessons, I thought it would be fun to open the curtain a little and share some things about myself that you probably wouldn’t expect.

🚀 So, here we go—3 fun facts about me that have absolutely nothing to do with being an English teacher. Spoiler alert: you’re safe from grammar tips in this post (for now!). Instead, you’ll get a peek into my world of family heritage, a very stubborn cat, and—believe it or not—a fast-growing jungle of houseplants.

🇬🇧 I’m half-British and half-Maltese 🇲🇹

It’s not the most common mix, but it makes life much more interesting! On one side, I’ve got the classic British love of tea, dry sense of humour, and queuing (yes, we actually enjoy standing in line—well, sort of). On the other, there’s the Maltese sunshine, food, and Mediterranean warmth. This heritage gives me a fun perspective on language and culture, and it also means I get to confuse people with my accent from time to time. Have you ever met someone with an unusual mix of backgrounds?

🐱 I have a 18-year-old cat in England 🐱

Yes, you read that right—18 years old! My cat, named Kinnie after the famous Maltese soft drink, is a British Shorthair who has completely mastered the art of ruling the house. He’s outrageously stubborn, extremely cute (even when he knows it), and somehow still manages to wake me up at 5am whenever I visit home 😢—just in case I’d forgotten who’s in charge. Kinnie has lived through more seasons of Doctor Who than some of my students have birthdays, and he struts around like the king of the sofa, claiming the exact middle spot every time. Honestly, he doesn’t just live in the house—he runs it. Do you think cats secretly know they’re royalty, or are they just really good at convincing us?

😬 I’m addicted to buying houseplants 🌿

You know that one person who says, “Oh, I’ll just get one plant to brighten up the flat”? Well, that was me—except it didn’t stop at one. Since moving in less than a month ago, I’ve already collected nine houseplants, and I’m not even sorry. There’s just something so calming about having greenery around you… until you realise you’re now responsible for watering a small rainforest. It doesn’t help that Facebook Marketplace sellers will deliver them directly to my door...How many plants do you think is too many? 😅

And there you have it—3 fun facts about your not-so-typical English teacher. None of them involve grammar rules, pronunciation drills, or essay marking (though don’t worry, those will be back soon enough). Which fact made you smile the most? And more importantly—what’s one fun fact about you?
