FAQs

What’s the best way to prepare for IELTS?

I recommend taking an intensive online course with me. IELTS requires a lot of preparation and although self-studying helps, it is better for a teacher to correct your work, particularly with the speaking and writing parts. Prepare to dedicate time and effort if you want to reach your targeted band score!

I’m so nervous about the speaking part. What should I do?

Listen to and read in English every day before your test. Read, listen to and watch as many different sources as possible including online news, documentaries and movies. Use subtitles to help you identify new vocabulary and expressions. Watch TED talks and follow the transcript as you listen.

Listen to a wide range of topics, from things you are passionate about to things that you’re not even slightly interested in. Listen to interviews and pay attention to how the person answers the questions. Do they use expressions that you could also use in your speaking test? How do they express their opinion? How do they give examples or reasons?

This is just the beginning of your preparation for the speaking part. I’ll give you more advice in class!

Where can I find IELTS practice tests and other prep material?

I have digital PDFs of IELTS coursebooks, including test papers. As well as receiving emailed copies of work we cover in lessons, you will receive weekly tests to do between lessons. If you like to have other self-studying materials, just ask and I’ll recommend the best ones!

How can I get band score 7?

Top tip: avoid Youtube videos and blog articles that falsely promise ‘Do this and you’ll get a 7!’. Achieving this band score takes hard work and dedication; you need a range of grammar, uncommon vocabulary and knowledge of tips and strategies to pass each section with a high score. Studying with a tutor gives you the advantage of learning your strengths and weaknesses. Not only that, but you will learn faster from your mistakes by receiving on the spot error correction, as well as specific writing feedback.

Achieving this advanced score also requires structuring your studies according to particular sections of the exam and prioritising your time. Do not disregard any module and take frequent IELTS practice tests, keeping a record of your scores to further motivate you which areas need most improvement.

Do you recommend booking the test online or face-to-face?

To be honest, there isn’t much difference so whatever is easiest for you! The Test Report Form, content, timing and structure of the test is the same.

If you take IELTS on paper at a test centre, the reading, writing and listening sections are on paper and the speaking test will be either face-to-face or through a video call with an IELTS examiner.

If you take IELTS online, you have the advantage of testing from home or any private space with good internet connection. All four sections of the test are online, with the speaking test conducted with an examiner through video call.

What is the difference between the Academic and General Training IELTS exams?

The Academic IELTS is designed for individuals seeking admission to academic programs or professional registration, while the General Training IELTS is for immigration and work purposes.
