Why I’m a Proud English Teacher: My Student’s Inspiring Art Therapy Workshop on Self-Awareness

🥰 My Colombian student Luisa had kindly invited me to 👉🏻 Creativa Studio 👈🏻, a therapeutic, safe space she created from scratch here in Malta. 🇲🇹

🧘🏻‍♀️ I joined Luisa’s self-awareness workshop and was genuinely mesmerised by the profound impact it had on me. In just two and a half hours, I was able to pause my hectic routine, reconnect with my core values, and gain clarity on the areas I want to nurture for personal growth.

🎨 Luisa reassured us right from the start that no art skills were required (a huge relief for me, as I have absolutely none 😅). She encouraged us not to worry about making our Tree of Life look perfect, but instead to treat the creative process as an opportunity to let go, relax, and simply be present.

What Is Art Therapy?

🧠 Have you ever felt calmer after doodling, painting, or even colouring in? I certainly did after attending Lu’s self-awareness workshop yesterday. Art therapy takes that idea a step further! It’s a type of therapy that uses creative activities like drawing, painting, collage, or sculpting to help people explore their thoughts and feelings.

💭 It’s not about making something perfect or pretty. It’s about using art as a way to communicate, understand yourself better, and even heal.

ℹ️ Art therapy is led by a trained art therapist, in this case, Lu who helps guide you through the creative process. They might ask you to draw how you’re feeling, use colours to show emotions, or make something that represents a memory or experience. Through this, you can discover new insights about yourself and find ways to manage stress, anxiety, or difficult emotions.

😎 So, if you’ve ever felt that creating art helps you relax or understand yourself better, you’ve already experienced a little of what art therapy can do!
